An article in Vogue November made me smile.
It's the annual shape issue which focuses on beauty and fashion for all shapes and sizes before Vogue goes back to only showing pictures of thin girls for eleven months - look at how progressive they are!
So yeah, they featured an article on women with large feet. Do I understand this struggle ? HELLS YES!
I am a freakishly tall woman. I'm quite happy with this and proud of my height. Yeah there are downsides like short men, short chairs while doing make-up, back pain and crouching down at the cinema but there are also upsides like never putting on weight, being taller then Kate Moss (trust me that feels good), being the same height as your boyfriend (who is also 6ft) and also, having legs for days! I'm quite proud of this.
However one of the downsides is large feet. I wear a size eight. I know that my struggle with this pales in comparison to the girls who have size ten feet but I will let you in on a secret.....
I am not a size eight.
I am a size nine.
I have carefully battered my feet into wearing a size too small. Growning up, I could never have the beautiful shoes of my classmates because my feet were just so damn awful. I've grown into my size a lot more as I got older. I used to wear mens work boots to school because (A) they looked bad ass and (B) I could kick people in them! and (C) all my friends were boys anyway. I would jazz up the plain black boots with rad looking laces -red with cobwebs on - in an attempt to feminize them a bit. But they were quite clearly - mens shoes.
I've also got one other issue with my feet - they are misshapen.
The top of my foot has bones out of place which stick out, the foot itself is wide as it is long and also, I have a broken toe on one side which means I can't bend my toes on the left side. I have really deeply unsexy feet.
So I commend my size 10 sisters on how they get through it. Most shops are now stocking SOME sizes in nines like Topshop or Primark. This is not all the time but merely some styles and you have to be quick off the mark to find them. They are usually flat sizes too because tall women with big feet apparently don't like heels.
Actually, I don't like heels....but not because of my height. A hit and run accident I was involved with while out one night showed me how dangerous heels actually are. The doctor showed me my boot and showed me the large chunks ripped out of the leather and the sole lying half off the boot. I was told - if you had been wearing heels then you would have severe damage to your foot. Scary. These were tough leather biker boots too.
Another sister from the large foot family also reminded me that in heels - a woman can't run as fast - so if you are in danger, it can mean life or death. Interesting. Interesting and scary.
